As a young woman in the late 1940s, Lloyd attended the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio, but was unable to finish her senior year due to financial circumstances. Her grandfather had financed the first three years of her education but was unable to continue following the close of his business in 1949.

Lloyd eventually married and passed on her passion for education to her sons, Jeff and Dale. But it wasn't until Lloyd was 72 years old, after the death of her husband, Joseph Lloyd, that she achieved her dream of completing a bachelor's degree.

Lloyd matriculated to The University of Findlay, which accepted some of her previously earned coursework. It took her two years, but in 2000 at age 74, Lloyd earned a bachelor of arts degree, fulfilling one of her lifelong goals.

“She truly valued higher education,” said her son, Dale Alexander. “She believed that education broadens one’s capacity to perceive the options in life and to choose the options which most reflect that person’s inner sense of life purpose.”

Lloyd established her scholarship fund prior to her death, and it was endowed in March 2010 following her death in July 2009.
