Tool	Purpose	Use
Text and note markings	To identify important material and information still to be learned by using a variety of markings: underlining, double underlining, circling, enumerating, starring, question-in-the-margin	Provides a strategy for more efficient review later on. Forces you to become a more active learner
Charts, maps or diagrams in texts and handouts	To condense or clarify information	Recreate charts, or use blank maps or diagrams to complete
Text Notes	To identify instructor's focus	Create test questions from the notes and then recite answers to strengthen your memory
Summaries	To identify the main ideas	Use as part of the preview before reading and as a learning guide for major concepts
Study Sheets	To select and condense material for easier understanding and memorizing	Try to recall as much as possible without looking
End-of-Chapter Questions	To identify key concepts authors believe important	Do in a timely manner and then use as part of a major test review
Study Groups	To create responsibility for preparing information; utilizes a variety of learning modes	Meet on a regular basis to compare and fill in notes, discuss difficult concepts, determine possible test questions
Self Test	To provide practice in creating and answering questions	Helps reduce test anxiety; prepares mind for the testing situation
List of 20	To determine the 20 most important points from the material covered	Creates focus when studying and helps prioritize learning
Study Cards	To provide a quick and efficient way to memorize words or lists
