The musical “Guys and Dolls” will open on stage at The University of Findlay on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and run through Sunday, Feb. 26, in the John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre. Performances are at 8 p.m., except for Sunday, at 2 p.m.  

Micheal F. Anders, Ph.D., is producer and musical director, with Vicki McClurkin as stage director. Brenda Hoyt-Brackman choreographed the show. Greg Griffin was scenic and lighting designer, and Kathy Newell did costume design.  

Sarah Black will play Sarah Brown, with Timothy Sherman as Sky Masterson. Ellis Thompson will portray Nathan Detroit, and Laura Abraham will take the role of Miss Adelaide.  

Based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon, a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, and music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, “Guys and Dolls” includes several recognizable tunes: “A Bushel and a Peck,” “I’ll Know When My Love Comes Along,” “If I Were a Bell,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”  

“Guys and Dolls” was originally produced on Broadway in 1950 and ran for 1,200 performances, directed by George S. Kaufman and choreographed by Michael Kidd.  

The story begins with a bet. Nathan Detroit bets high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson that Sky cannot persuade Save-A-Soul Missionary Sister Sarah Brown to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. While the worldly Sky works his charms on a wary Sarah, Nathan is doing his best to stay outside the matrimonial clutches of his long-suffering fiancée, Miss Adelaide.  

“Guys and Dolls” is a fable about what happens to gambling men and the women who long to tame them. Set in the colorful world of New York City in the mid-20th century, the romantic and funny “Guys And Dolls” is populated with gangsters and gamblers, missionary dolls and scantily clad showgirls, and one of the great musical scores in the history of American theater.
