Department Goals

Mission Statement
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences will provide high-quality, science-based education to pharmacy students, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. This education will emphasize critical thinking and the developmentof problem solving skills. Such an education should enable them to provide innovative, cost-effective and excellent healthcare services through the application of relevant scientific principles, research and continued education. 

Department Goals
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences has three goals centered around teaching, service and research.

Teaching
To develop a science-based pharmacy education for the 21st century pharmacist that:
  • Provides a sounds understanding of the scientific bases of pharmacy practice
  • Enables development of innovative science-based practice models that offer unique patient services
  • Promotes understanding of the changing roles among healthcare professionals
  • Anticipates new professional opportunities and challenges that the changing roles among healthcare professionals will bring to the practice of the profession
  • Promotes awareness of cost-effectiveness of pharmacy practice
  • Promotes knowledge of technological advances (e.g. robots) on the horizon that could impact pharmacy practice
  • Promotes understanding of the legal and regulatory framework of practice of the profession and the need for reform
  • Promotes interests in pursuing a pharmacy career as a "clinician-scientist"

Service
To develop a spirit of service to the School, the University and the profession of pharmacy

1. All faculty will be actively involved in scientific/professional organizations
2. Activities include:

  • Membership
  • Office holding
  • Meeting attendance and participation

3. All faculty will also serve (on a shared basis) on:

  • School Committees
  • College of Health Professions Committees
  • Senate Ad Hoc Committees

Research
To develop an environment that fosters research and scholarship

1. All department faculty will be involved in research/scholarly activities through:

  • Publication of articles in peer-reviewed professional journals
  • Presentation at professional meetings (local, regional and national)
  • Extramural grant submission

2. Develop a student summer research program

  • Introduce students to formulation of a hypothesis
  • Experimental verification of the given hypothesis
